Toru Sakakibara

Born in Tokyo. Entered the Department of Music of the Tokyo University of Arts. Studied the trombone under Kiyoshi Ito, Yukio Nagahama, and Alois Bambula. and conducting under Yoko Matsuo, and started his musical career while still a student.
After graduating of the Tokyo University of Arts, he went to West Berlin, and studied under Siegfried Cieslik and Johan Doms. Perfomed with the Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra Berlin, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, and with various chamber orchestras and took part in the Motepulciano Music Festival. He returned to Japan in October 1991, and has been active as conductor, musical director, and producer. He took part in the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Arts Festival of 1996 and 1998 as musical direct. In 1997 he conducted at the Japanese premiere of Minoru Miki’s opera Sumidagawa: Kusabira. In April 1999, conducted the chorus for Die Fledermaus at the New National Theatre, and in September of that year, conducted Minoru Miki’s opera Hagoromo at a performance aided by the International Cultural Exchange Foundation at the Toreada Theatre in Habarovsk. In Marh 2001, he produced and conducted the performance of Mikado performed by the Chichibu Citizens’ Opera, and has since took part in a number of performances held in Chichibu. He has also conducted at various ballet performances, such as the NBA Ballet Company’s Nutcracker of January 2003. He was the musical director of the Japan Operetta Company and the musical director and conductor of the Japan Operetta Orchestra from 1997 to 2002. He is now the conductor of the Opera Theatre Utaza, and is appearing at functions aided by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Mr. Sakakibara is also the musical director and conductor of the Ensemble, and is the president of the Tokyo Theatre Orchestra.
